Leur nom fut choisi en hommage au rocker texan Buddy Holly et ils comptèrent comme membre fondateur Graham Nash, futur Grosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Un groupe qui connut plusieurs changement de personnels, toujours en activité, et qui a bien sûr marqué le british beat.
